Is eBay Motors legit? Yes. eBay Motors is the vehicle marketplace of eBay Inc., one of the oldest and largest online marketplaces in the country, and eligible cars bought through it can be covered by eBay’s Vehicle Purchase Protection for up to $500,000, subject to the program’s limits, exclusions and claim deadlines. The risk sits with the person behind a listing and with any payment that leaves eBay’s system. A real car, a real seller and an eBay checkout make for a much better-protected purchase. A wire transfer to a “seller” who emailed you outside eBay has no protection at all.

This guide covers how buying on eBay Motors works, eBay Motors fees for buyers and sellers in 2026, what changed in eBay’s protection program on August 1, 2026, the scams to watch for, and how to get the car home when it is 1,000 miles away. SAKAEM Logistics is an auto transport broker registered with the FMCSA under MC 16237, arranging shipments since 2017, and we have no affiliation with eBay. eBay purchases are a small share of our work, about 1 to 1.5 percent of our customers, but the shipping side is where we can add what the other reviews leave out.

Key Takeaways

  • eBay Motors is legitimate, and buyers pay no eBay fee to bid or buy. Sellers pay $34 or $79 to list and no fee when the vehicle sells, per eBay’s US fee page as of October 2026.
  • On August 1, 2026, eBay raised its Vehicle Purchase Protection cap from $100,000 to $500,000 and extended damage and misrepresentation cover to vehicles up to 20 years old.
  • Protection only applies to purchases completed on eBay. Off-eBay payments and damage during shipping are excluded.
  • Verify the listing and the seller before you pay anything, and before you book transport. The middle 50 percent of shipments in SAKAEM’s pricing database cost $925 to $1,380.

How Buying a Car on eBay Motors Works

eBay Motors is an online marketplace where dealers and private owners list cars, trucks, motorcycles and other vehicles for buyers anywhere in the country. eBay hosts the listing and the checkout, but the vehicle belongs to the seller, and the sale is a contract between the two of you.

Listings come in three formats. An auction goes to the highest bid that meets any reserve price, Buy It Now is a fixed asking price, and Best Offer lets you propose a lower price the seller can accept, reject or counter. When you win or commit to buy, most listings require a deposit, which sellers of vehicles listed at $1,000 or more set at a minimum of 1 percent of the price. The balance, the title transfer and the pickup follow. When the listing offers eBay’s Secure Purchase checkout, use it: both sides verify their identity, the seller uploads title, VIN and odometer photos, and the paperwork is signed digitally.

Is eBay Motors Legit? The Verdict

eBay Motors is a legitimate marketplace run by a public company, and a car bought through its checkout has more built-in protection than a private sale on most listing sites. It is still an open marketplace, though. eBay does not inspect the cars, guarantee their condition or own them, so judging the car, judging the seller and keeping the payment on eBay are your job.

eBay Motors Fees in 2026

eBay Motors fees fall almost entirely on sellers. eBay Motors charges buyers nothing to bid or buy, and charges sellers a flat listing fee with no commission on the sale. The figures below come from eBay’s US Motors selling fees page, as of October 2026.

What a buyer pays

ShippingTransport company$925 to $1,380 for the middle 50% of shipments, per SAKAEM’s pricing database

What a seller pays (selling a car on eBay Motors)

FeeAmount
Listing fee, vehicle listed at $15,000 or less$34
Listing fee, vehicle listed over $15,000$79
Final value fee when the vehicle sells$0
Deposit processing fee2.8% of the deposit ($14 on a $500 deposit)
Legacy packages (relists of listings created before April 15, 2026)$19, $34 or $79

For auctions, eBay uses the highest of the starting bid, reserve price or Buy It Now price to decide which listing fee applies, and listing fees are not refunded if the car doesn’t sell. Older blog posts quoting $95 listing fees or 2 percent final value fees describe earlier eBay Motors fee schedules.

eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection in 2026

eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection (VPP) is a free program that reimburses buyers for specific problems with an eligible vehicle bought on eBay: a car that never arrives, a title problem, a car that isn’t what the listing described, or major undisclosed damage. eBay’s own terms state that it is not insurance and not a warranty. The figures below come from eBay’s Vehicle Purchase Protection page, as of October 2026.

What VPP covers and what it doesn’t

Covered (eligible purchases)Not covered
Non-delivery after you paid or sent a refundable depositAny deal or payment made off eBay
No title, an undisclosed lien, or an undisclosed salvage, rebuilt, flood or lemon brandBuyer’s remorse and non-refundable deposits
Wrong make, model or year, or a vehicle stolen before the sale (under 20 years old)Normal wear, maintenance items, rust and cosmetic damage
Odometer off by more than 5,000 miles (cars, trucks, RVs under 20 years old)Damage after purchase, including damage during shipping
Undisclosed engine, transmission, body or frame damage with repairs over $1,000 (under 20 years old)Problems disclosed in the listing or before you took possession
Up to $800 of original shipping costs, when a licensed shipper was used and the car is returned or taken backVehicles without a clean title, inspection costs, taxes and fees

What changed on August 1, 2026

Purchases before Aug 1, 2026Purchases from Aug 1, 2026
Maximum reimbursement$100,000$500,000, capped at the price or deposit paid
Damage and mileage coverVehicles under 10 years oldVehicles under 20 years old

Several popular articles still quote the older $100,000 cap and 10-year cutoff, and some say eBay’s protection doesn’t apply to cars at all. The terms in effect on the day you buy are the ones that apply.

Who qualifies and how to file

The vehicle has to cost more than $100, be listed in the eBay Motors vehicle category, and be bought by auction, Buy It Now or Best Offer and paid for, using Secure Purchase when the listing offers it. Buyer, seller and vehicle all have to be in the US or Canada, and VPP accepts only one reimbursement request per buyer every 180 days.

The deadlines are tight. Contact the seller first, then file within 45 days of the listing end date and send your documents within 14 days of filing. eBay says decisions typically take 30 to 45 days. Do not repair, sell or release the car without the program administrator’s written consent, because doing so can void the claim.

Is It Safe to Buy a Car on eBay? Scams and Red Flags

Buying a car on eBay is safest when the purchase, the payment and the communication all stay on eBay. The most common eBay Motors scams work by moving you off the platform, where eBay’s protection no longer reaches. News reports of police warnings describe buyers who negotiated with “sellers” by email and sent certified funds for cars that eBay was never involved in selling.

The warning signs repeat:

  • A request to pay outside eBay’s process. Pay only through the method set in the eBay listing or checkout. A seller who contacts you outside eBay, or asks for a different method such as a payment app, gift cards or a wire to a new account, is moving the deal off eBay, and VPP excludes transactions made off eBay.
  • An “eBay agent” or “eBay escrow.” Scammers send emails dressed up as eBay, promising that eBay will hold your money until delivery. Payment for an eBay purchase happens in your eBay account, not through a link a seller emails you.
  • A price far below market with a story. The seller is deployed, relocating or settling an estate, and the car is “already at a shipping depot.”
  • The seller insists on their own transport company. A seller-chosen shipper who wants payment up front is a classic setup. Real transport companies are registered with the FMCSA, and our guide to car shipping scams shows how to check one.

Our own records show the pattern from the shipping side. We have had customers book transport for an eBay car, then cancel because they found out the listing wasn’t legitimate. That is the right outcome, but the better order is to verify the listing and the seller first and book the truck second.

Before You Bid: Checks That Protect You

The checks that matter most take an evening and a few hundred dollars, and they are the same checks VPP assumes you made.

  1. Run the VIN. Buy a vehicle history report and compare it with the listing: title brands, accidents, odometer readings and the states the car has been registered in. Check open recalls for free on NHTSA’s recall lookup.
  2. Order a pre-purchase inspection. A mobile inspection service near the car can check it before you commit. A real seller almost always allows one.
  3. Read the seller’s feedback properly. Look for feedback from selling vehicles or large items, not only from buying, and for how long the account has been active.
  4. Confirm the title. Ask whose name is on the title, whether there is a lien, and whether the title is in hand. A seller who still owes a lender cannot hand over a clean title on pickup day.
  5. Mind the 20-year line. VPP’s misrepresentation and damage cover stops at vehicles 20 years old and older, so a classic needs a stronger inspection.

Getting Your eBay Car Home

eBay Motors shipping is the buyer’s job, because eBay does not ship vehicles. Once the sale is done, you either travel to collect the car or hire a transport company to bring it to you. For a long-distance purchase, compare the shipping quote against airfare, fuel, hotels and the days off work it takes to collect the car and drive it home. On cross-country routes, shipping is often the cheaper option.

What shipping an eBay car costs

Across SAKAEM’s pricing database of 335,037 auto transport shipments, the median price to ship a car is $1,140, and the middle 50 percent of shipments cost $925 to $1,380, per the database’s July 2026 update. Distance moves the price the most. These are real lanes from SAKAEM orders booked from January 2025 to early October 2026, cancelled orders excluded:

Example laneTypical distanceSAKAEM ordersMedian priceMedian days on the truck
Georgia or North Carolina to Floridaabout 400 to 600 miles56$715 to $7251
California to Texasabout 1,400 miles137$1,3503
California to Florida or New Yorkabout 2,500 to 2,900 miles150$1,5505 to 6

Prices are what customers paid, across all vehicle types and both open and enclosed transport. Days on the truck run from the carrier’s pickup date to its delivery date, and a price range means the grouped lanes have slightly different medians. For your exact route, the car shipping cost calculator gives an instant estimate, and our page on shipping a car bought online covers the process.

Brief the seller before the truck arrives

The pickup goes smoothly when the car is fully paid for and the seller is ready to release it with the keys. A dealer releases cars during business hours, so give your shipper a named contact there. A private seller needs a pickup window they can be home for.

Tell the seller which transport company is coming and roughly when. Our operations team adds one more instruction for every seller: make sure the company that arrives to collect the car is the same company we assigned and confirmed to you in our emails and text messages. A driver from any other company should not get the keys, whatever paperwork they show. Keep the bill of lading and the shipping invoice with your purchase records.

Shipping damage is outside eBay’s protection

VPP excludes damage that happens after the sale, including in transit. Transport damage is handled separately, usually through the carrier’s liability and cargo insurance, subject to that policy’s coverage and exclusions, which is why it matters who hauls the car. Our guide to auto transport insurance explains what a carrier’s policy covers and what to check before you book.

eBay Motors vs Other Car Sites

eBay Motors stands apart from most listing sites because the transaction can happen on the platform, with a deposit, a checkout and purchase protection. Most competitors only connect you with the seller.

Who Should Use eBay Motors, and Who Shouldn’t

eBay Motors suits buyers who want a national search, are comfortable with auctions or negotiating, and will do their own checks. It is especially strong for project cars, work trucks, motorcycles and harder-to-find models.

It is the wrong place, or needs extra caution, in a few situations:

  • You can’t arrange an inspection. You would be relying on photos, and VPP’s $1,000 damage threshold won’t cover smaller problems.
  • The car is 20 years old or older. VPP’s misrepresentation and damage cover doesn’t apply, which removes much of eBay’s advantage for classics.
  • You want a return window. eBay Motors sales are final apart from VPP claims. Retailers such as Carvana and CarMax sell return policies, at a price.

Bottom Line

eBay Motors is a legitimate marketplace with something most car sites don’t have: a checkout and a purchase protection program that, since August 1, 2026, covers eligible cars up to $500,000 and up to 20 years old. The protection only works when the purchase and the payment stay on eBay, and it never covers damage in transit. Run the VIN, inspect the car, verify the seller and pay inside eBay, and the eBay part of the deal becomes the easy part.

Getting the car home is the last step. SAKAEM Logistics has arranged door-to-door transport as an auto transport broker since 2017, with a 4.6-star average across more than 580 Google reviews. Get an instant quote with the seller’s address, and add the shipping cost to your maximum bid before the auction ends.

eBay Motors FAQ

Is eBay Motors legit?

Yes. eBay Motors is the vehicle marketplace of eBay Inc., and purchases completed through its checkout can be covered by Vehicle Purchase Protection for up to $500,000, capped at what you paid.

Is it safe to buy a car on eBay?

It is safest when the purchase, the payment and the messages stay on eBay and you check the car’s history and condition first. Most losses come from fake sellers asking for wire transfers, gift cards or payment through an emailed link.

Does eBay Motors charge buyers a fee?

No. eBay charges buyers nothing to bid on or buy a vehicle, per its US fee pages as of October 2026. Buyers still pay their own state’s tax, title and registration costs.

How much does it cost to sell a car on eBay Motors?

Sellers pay $34 to list a vehicle at $15,000 or less and $79 above that, with no final value fee. eBay also deducts 2.8 percent from any deposit the buyer pays.

What does eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection cover?

VPP covers non-delivery, title problems, a vehicle that doesn’t match the listing, odometer discrepancies over 5,000 miles, and undisclosed major damage over $1,000. It does not cover buyer’s remorse, cosmetic issues or off-eBay deals.

Does eBay protect cars older than 20 years?

Only partly. Cover for misrepresentation, mileage and undisclosed damage applies to vehicles under 20 years old, while non-delivery and title problems are covered for any eligible purchase.

Does eBay Motors ship cars?

No. The buyer either collects the car in person or hires an auto transport company, under a separate contract from the eBay purchase.

Does Vehicle Purchase Protection cover shipping damage?

No. VPP excludes damage after the purchase, including in transit. Transport damage is usually claimed through the carrier’s liability and cargo insurance, subject to its coverage, so note any damage on the bill of lading at delivery.

Can I pay for an eBay car outside of eBay?

Pay only through the method set in the eBay listing or checkout. VPP excludes transactions made off eBay, so never pay a seller who contacts you outside eBay or asks for a different payment method, which is the most common sign of a scam.

Is eBay Motors better than Cars.com?

They do different jobs. eBay Motors handles the transaction and offers purchase protection, while Cars.com is a larger dealer listings site with dealer reviews and the sale happens off the site. Many buyers search both.
